What started out as a special request from the Malaysian government for Halal beef, has turned into a special story of a very special company - AL SAFA HALAL.

It was in 1992 that officials from Malaysia came to Canada to meet with several beef companies, hoping to find a facility that would be willing to convert to Zabiha in order to supply Halal beef to their country. One of the companies approached was MGI Beef Packers, a mid-sized plant that was owned and operated by a group of investors, including the Muller family. After lengthy discussions with Islamic leaders and a subsequent thorough understanding of Halal procedures, MGI agreed to convert its entire slaughter to Zabiha, and soon thereafter began shipping Halal beef not only to Malaysia but to other Muslim countries as well.

As time passed, MGI received many requests from Muslim communities within North America who were looking for convenient, consumer-ready products such as ground beef, stew beef and beef burgers. After purchasing some small scale equipment, MGI began to manufacture and sell these products under the label "Canada's Finest Halal". However, as the costs of marketing a consumer branded product line escalated, MGI could not sustain future plans for expansion.

On September 1, 1999 AL SAFA HALAL was created by the Muller family together with two other partners, Otter Capital and Packaged Food Investors. Today, AL SAFA is widely distributed to many grocery stores and foodservice operations throughout North America. With a product line that has grown to include chicken, turkey, beef, fish, pizza, samosa and falafel, the continued success of AL SAFA HALAL is based upon the guiding principles of Halal and Zabiha. In a world where high tech machines routinely slaughter chickens at high speed, when visiting the processing facilities of AL SAFA you will be pleasantly surprised to witness Muslims performing the Zabiha - hand slaughtered in accordance with strict Islamic Law. All facilities are government inspected and HACCP approved. All ingredients and all procedures are Halal certified and independently monitored by IFANCA inspectors (The Islamic Food & Nutrition Council of America).
